Information about institutional site license for Nature publications onlineFor about a year, UW-Madison was one of the few institutions nationwide that served as a BETA TEST SITE for the full-text version of Nature Online (http://www.nature.com) and the Nature monthlies. All parts of the journals were available to UW-Madison users upon publication. Effective March 1, 2001 the beta test ended and our campus no longer has full-text access to the online Nature publications. The University wishes to pursue an institutional subscription but we cannot agree to the license offered by the publisher.
Libraries across the country share our objections to the license and have expressed those concerns to the publisher. Some of the major research universities/institutions which have decided not to accept the license and/or pricing model currently being offered are: Princeton University, California Digital Library (representing all of the UC campuses), Cornell University, University of Rochester, University of Chicago, University of Illinois-Chicago, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Michigan, University of Minnesota, Michigan State University, Harvard University, and Iowa State University. A more comprehensive list of libraries which have so far declined signing a site license is available. By not agreeing to the current license, libraries can send a message to the publisher and influence changes in the license. Print Subscriptions to the weekly Nature remain widely available in the UW-Madison libraries. Please Send Your Comments to UsIf you wish to comment on this issue to campus library administration Please email: Ken Frazier kfrazier@library.wisc.edu who is Director of the General Library System at UW-Madison. Voice Your Concerns to the PublisherIf you share our concerns and wish to contact the publisher. Please email: Donna Muscatello d.muscatello@NATURENY.com who is Nature's Library Relations Manager. Your message will also be copied to UW Physics Librarian Kerry Kresse (kkresse@library.wisc.edu) who is a member of Nature's Library Advisory Board More Information About the License
