Current Information on interim operation of the University Library City Center

December 19, 2025 / wia / UB

The construction work in May 2025 created the conditions for the University Library at the city center location to continue operating on an interim basis until the necessary general refurbishment.

Preparation for interim operation

Until the general refurbishment, only the ground floor is open for use. These floors have been separated from the ground floor by new fire doors and walls. Some of the employees moved to the temporary offices at Herdweg 51 in November 2025. At the beginning of January, the relocation of the Closed Stacks holdings from the basement storage area to a temporary external storage facility will begin.

These holdings will therefore be unavailable during the move from January 10, 2026, until the end of April 2026 and cannot be ordered or borrowed during this period.

If you need access to individual volumes during the relocation phase, the University Library will try to obtain them for you via interlibrary loan. The costs for any interlibrary loans will be covered centrally. If you require an interlibrary loan, please contact fernleihe@ub.uni-stuttgart.de directly by email or ask the staff at the circulation desk. Unfortunately, regular interlibrary loans via the catalog are not possible.

The holdings of the University of Stuttgart Library City Center with the location designations Open Shelves, Reading Room, and Open Stacks can be ordered as usual.

Interim operations on the first floor

The circulation desk, the pick-up shelf with the available media orders and the self-checkout terminal have been moved to the first floor.

Study places for individual work are available in the foyer, study places for group work are available in the auditorium. Alternative study areas to the limited study options in the library in the city center can be found in the immediate vicinity in the institute libraries in College Building I and II. Further information

Three computer workstations for researching the catalog and e-media, two book scanner and a microform reader can now be found in the foyer.

A copy machine has been set up at the study stations for group work in the auditorium.

The TIK box for the collection of plot orders is now located at the pick-up shelf on the first floor.

The TIK user helpdesk service in the city center has moved to the Kollegiengebäude II (K II). You can now find the TIK user helpdesk service in the entrance area of the Library of the Institutes of Linguistics and Literary Studies on the 3rd floor of K II (Keplerstraße 17).

It is not longer possible for library visitors to take books from the shelves. All desired items must be requested via the online catalog and can then be checked out at the pick-up shelf via the self-service terminal or at the circulation desk. Media can only be returned at the circulation desk in the foyer. Outside of service hours, media can be returned to the security service.

Doctoral students who wish to submit the mandatory copies of their theses can do so as usual by appointment in the entrance area at the office of the Team Publication Services (T3).
