Directional gyro Siemens LKu4

Collections of the University of Stuttgart

from the Collection on Gyro Technology and Inertial Navigation

The Lku4 directional gyroscope, manufactured by a Siemens subsidiary during World War II, highlights the diverse connections within the collection. The device probably came from industry via personal contacts to the former TH Stuttgart. Most recently, the instrument was used in an interdisciplinary research project: Gyrolog was a joint 3D digitization project involving the Chair of Aeronautical Engineering, the Department of History of Science and Technology, the Institute of Photogrammetry, and the Institute for Parallel and Distributed Systems. The 3D digitizations of the gyroscope collection brought the Stuttgart gyroscopes back together with objects from the Technical University of Munich and the Johannes Kepler University Linz. Their instruments are historically closely linked to the Stuttgart gyroscopes, were virtually reunited with them by Gyrolog, and now serve together as objects in research and teaching.
