As of July 10, Library Also Open Until 10 p.m. On Weekends!

June 30, 2023 / cr

Partial rollback of the shortened opening hours from April 2023

For the time being, funded only with the support of stuvus and through extensive cuts by the University Library elsewhere

In January 2018, the University of Stuttgart Library introduced the opening of the library until midnight seven days a week with the financial support of the University and the Student Council of the University of Stuttgart (stuvus). Despite existing demand, this service had to be cancelled in April of this year due to rising energy costs and other price increases caused by crisis and inflation.

The University Library is convinced that, in addition to providing items and online resources for research, teaching, and studies, offering open spaces for self-study or collaborative group work belongs to its core services. From July 10, it will extend its opening hours again and open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays and also Sundays.

Since the 7-day opening of the library was introduced, it has been made possible with special funds of stuvus. The budget of the University Library has never been increased by the University to cover the cost of extended opening. The current extension of opening hours, the opening until 10 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, is being funded with the support of stuvus and through cuts of the University Library elsewhere: stuvus will cover 20,000 € of the necessary additional 110,000 € for the next six months. The University Library will provide 90,000 € through cuts mainly in the acquisitions budget.

The University Library deeply regrets the cost-cutting measures and hopes to have made a reasonable trade-off by funding the extended opening hours through cuts in the provision of literature.
