Reel to Reel Tape Recorder

Collections of the University of Stuttgart

from the Stuttgart Media Archives of the Departments of Modern German Literature of the Institute of Literary Studies

The Stuttgart Media Archive owns a total of five tape recorders. One of them is the Uher Variocord 63 S, manufactured around 1970, which is still fully functional today. It can be used to play the tapes from the media archive so that they can be listened to and digitized. The device has also been used in teaching courses. It made an appearance on stage in the staged reading of Gerlind Reinshagen's play “Sonntagskinder” by German language and literature students under the direction of Annette Bühler-Dietrich and Axel Brauch in the summer of 2024. At events at the German Literature Archive in Marbach and the Dreigroschentheater in Stuttgart, it was used to give the recorded music a historically appropriate sound aesthetic.
